Family counselling in Langley and Surrey
Families go through a lot together — moves, new schools, losses, changes in who does what. When communication breaks down, home can start to feel tense or distant. Family counselling helps family members understand each other, change the patterns that keep repeating, and find shared ways forward.
I’m especially attuned to families living across two cultures, where parents and children may hold different values, expectations, or even first languages.
Families often reach out about
- Frequent conflict between parents and children
- Parenting challenges and disagreements about discipline
- Sibling conflict
- Different cultural values across generations
- Adjusting after immigration, separation or loss
- One family member struggling in a way that affects everyone
How we’ll work together
We’ll start by understanding how your family works — the roles, the unspoken rules, and what each person needs. Adlerian therapy pays close attention to belonging and encouragement within families, and that guides much of how I work.
Sessions may include the whole family or different combinations of family members, depending on what will be most helpful.
“We are not determined by our experiences, but are self-determined by the meaning we give them.”
Why language matters
Some feelings are easier to say in your first language
For many people, it’s easier to talk about emotions, family roles, migration and identity in the language that feels most natural. You may be able to say things more fully when you don’t have to translate them first.
Speak in Mandarin, English, or move between both
Name family and cultural dynamics more naturally
Feel understood in the context of immigration and bicultural life
Skip the pressure of explaining every nuance from scratch
FAQ
Questions about family counselling
Who should come to the first session?
That depends on your family and what’s going on. It often helps to start with the parents or caregivers, then include other family members. We can decide together during the free consultation.
We speak a mix of Mandarin and English at home. Is that okay?
Yes. Many families I work with switch between languages. Each person can speak in whichever language feels most comfortable.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
Start with a free, no-pressure 15-minute conversation — in Mandarin or English.
